Welfare-Led Kennel and Daycare Management
Learn to plan care around the individual dog—not simply provide secure accommodation, exercise and a busy activity programme. This focused short course explores how admission decisions, accommodation, daily routines, rest, enrichment and social arrangements contribute to a welfare-led approach to kennel and daycare management.
Designed for kennel and daycare owners, managers and animal-care professionals, the course combines accessible explanations with practical examples relevant to South Africa. Develop a structured approach to assessing needs, preparing individual care plans and reviewing whether the care being provided remains appropriate.
Why choose this course?
Move beyond standard routines and one-size-fits-all care. Learn to explain why an arrangement has been selected, how it should be implemented, what observations matter and when it needs changing or professional review.
Study from home using a detailed study guide, worked examples, lesson activities and supporting guidance for care records and handovers. No access to a working kennel, daycare facility or dog is required. Complete the assessment using a supplied written case rather than arranging potentially stressful interactions with real animals.
Who is this course for?
The course is suitable for kennel and daycare owners, managers, supervisors, boarding staff, animal-care assistants, welfare workers and aspiring pet-care professionals.
It is also relevant to dog trainers and other practitioners who advise caregivers or facilities about boarding, daycare and individual care arrangements. It supports staff responsible for implementing care plans, recording observations, communicating concerns and maintaining continuity across shifts.
What you will learn
The course is delivered as one module containing six connected lessons:
- Understanding welfare-led care, individual needs, meaningful choice and the relationship between provision and the dog’s experience.
- Gathering admission information, assessing suitability and preparing clear individual care plans.
- Evaluating accommodation, security, environmental comfort, feeding, toileting, rest, activity and enrichment.
- Planning appropriate social arrangements, observing interactions and recognising when group activity needs adjustment or should stop.
- Understanding hygiene, infection prevention, health monitoring, medication records and emergency procedures.
- Allocating responsibilities, preparing effective handovers, communicating with owners and reviewing whether care remains suitable.
Course outcomes
On successful completion, you should be able to gather relevant background information, assess whether a facility can meet a dog’s needs and prepare an individual care plan with clear instructions and review arrangements.
You will also learn to evaluate daily routines, record physical and behavioural changes objectively and identify concerns requiring veterinary or other professional assistance. The emphasis is on informed decisions rather than assuming that a quiet dog, a full activity timetable or an incident-free day automatically demonstrates good welfare.
Practical activities with a professional purpose
Explore everyday decisions such as admitting a dog with additional needs, allocating quieter accommodation, protecting rest, selecting enrichment and providing individual care when group participation is unsuitable.
Worked examples and activities help you move from broad instructions such as “keep an eye on him” to useful observations, clear responsibilities and appropriate follow-up. You will also consider how staffing, reception duties, cleaning, medication and other demands affect the care a facility can reliably provide.
The course examines communication as part of welfare management. Learn how admission records, care plans, daily observations, incident reports and shift handovers work together to support consistent care.
Course format and duration
Duration: Approximately 10 hours in total, including study, activities and assessment. Individual study times will vary.
This is a one-module home-study course. The six lessons are sections within that module, not six separate modules.
Your learning materials include a detailed study guide, worked examples, lesson activities, a supplied management case study and supporting guidance for admission records, individual care plans, daily observations, incident reports and shift handovers.
The course can be completed using hypothetical situations. There is no requirement to introduce unfamiliar dogs, provoke behaviour or collect recordings for coursework.
Assessment and certificate
Assessment consists of 10 knowledge questions and one applied kennel-and-daycare management task.
For the applied task, review a supplied case involving dogs with different care needs, reduced food intake, suspected infectious illness, limited rest provision, competing staff duties and unclear medication records. Identify the priorities, recommend appropriate adjustments and explain how responsibilities, professional advice and review should be managed.
No live-dog assessment or video submission is required. Both assessments must be completed successfully to receive a Pet Sense College certificate of completion.
A focused course with clear professional boundaries
Welfare-led management supports appropriate everyday care, but it does not replace veterinary assessment, specialist behavioural assistance or facility-specific staff training.
This course does not, on its own, qualify learners to diagnose illness or behavioural disorders, prescribe treatment, change veterinary instructions, undertake complex behaviour modification or perform physical fight-intervention procedures.
It also does not certify that a facility meets legal or municipal requirements. Learners are taught to recognise when a decision requires veterinary input, further professional assistance or checks with the relevant local authority.
Start with one focused skill
Develop a more individual, practical and welfare-led approach to kennel and daycare care through a manageable short course you can study from anywhere in South Africa.
